Preface

Objective

The aim and objective of the book is to make the readers familiar with the behavior and design of the structural elements and their connections in accordance with the latest code of practice IS: 800-2007 based on limit state design, released in February 2008. Two fundamental changes have been made in the present version of IS: 800. First, the switching over from working stress design approach to limit state design approach and second, the convention of member axes; the axis along the member length is designated as xx-axis, the major axis of the section as zz-axis, and the minor axis of the section as yy-axis. This convention of axes has been adopted to be compatible with computer programs. Prior to the introduction of limit state design of steel structures, the working stress and plastic design approaches were being practiced with the former approach being the dominant one. Since there is a switchover from working stress to limit state design philosophy, IS: 800-2007 incorporates both the approaches and, as such, both these approaches are embodied in the text with emphasis on limit state design approach.
