Introduction

Optical measurement techniques have many advantages over the others if either industrial measurements or, clinical studies in the field of life sciences are considered. These advantages include, noncontact, nondestructive, fast and harsh environment adaptive measurement techniques. Certainly, there are tasks where traditional electronic-based sensors work well and such techniques with optical ones need not be replaced. However, optical measurement techniques have great importance in cases when optical fiber is the only way to reach the object to be measured, or noncontact of the gauge is a must.

Typically the industrial circles want to get everything at the lowest price. Usually this leads to compromises in realization of a measurement system. Nevertheless, once the advantages of the optical measurement techniques become clear – for instance to product managers and quality inspection engineers – the barriers for new gauges become much lower. Usually more than speaking with the industrial people about the science behind the optical measurement techniques, it would be more correct to tell them how their problems are solved and how accurate and reliable the device would be. For a scientist, finding a common language between the partners is usually a long jump from academic circles to factories.

The partners presenting life sciences, e.g., medical doctors adapt quite quickly to new optical measurement devices and understand the basic scientific backgrounds. The trend of using novel optical sensors and also imaging techniques will enhance in life sciences. The price is usually not as big an issue as the benefit of the device, when it comes to optical measurement techniques for life science.
