I wanted to share some information about masonry wall structures, also known as CMU structures. These structures require a detailed design to ensure the safety of the masonry blocks, which are the core component. Depending on the type of masonry blocks used, whether they are empty or grouted, reinforced or not, the design process may differ and various checks need to be applied. this spreadsheet will assist with the design of masonry walls under both vertical loads (dead & live) and lateral loads (seismic and wind). You can easily select the load combinations you want to consider based on the ASCE7-16 guidelines. Additionally, the spreadsheet features an interaction diagram, which can help you determine if your wall is safe under the effect of axial and flexural loads.
